WHEN THE BIBLE SAYS HE IS COMING…HE IS COMING!
Why do so many fail to consider Jesus’ own words?
He said: “I will come again.”
The prophet Zechariah even tells us where He will return. Let us read Zechariah 14:4: “And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south”.
It is true that more than 100 prophecies in the Old Testament foretold Jesus Christ’s first coming. Among them is Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David, the son of Jesse, Isaiah 11:1, “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:”. Also that the Messiah would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), that He would live in Galilee (Isaiah 9:1–2), that His mission would include the Gentiles (Isaiah 42:1–4) and that He would die with the wicked (Isiah 53:9).
Other prophecies foretold that He would be born in Bethlehem, Micah 5:2, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
And again that He would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, said the prophet Zechariah in 11:12–13, “ And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
Further to that, that Jesus would enter Jerusalem on a donkey (9:9) and that He would be like a smitten shepherd (13:7).
Wow! What accuracies the prophets had. Yet we have a great difficulty in believing!
Did you know that the first and Second Coming of Jesus are mentioned in the Garden of Eden?
When Satan tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God put a curse on Satan and said He would send a seed of the woman. The seed would bruise Satan’s head and Satan would bruise the seed’s heel (Genesis 3:15).
This is a prophecy of the First Coming of Jesus and the virgin birth.
- Why? Because there is no such thing as the “seed” of a woman.
- Men have seed, but women have eggs (Genesis 3:15).
- The seed of a woman would be a miracle birth.
- God also put a curse on Eve: “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow [birth pains] and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children” (Genesis 3:16).
This is a prophecy of the Second Coming.
The Greek word translated “sorrows” means “travail,” “labour pains,” and “birth pains,” etc.
- Birth pains increase in frequency and intensity as the arrival of a child nears.
- Jesus said false Christs, wars and rumours of wars, famine, pestilence, and earthquakes are “the beginning of sorrows” (beginning of the birth pains, or the Tribulation period; see Matthew 24:8).
- Paul said, “For when they say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child” (Like birth pains; see 1 Thessalonians 5:3).
- This is why many Bible prophecy teachers believe natural disasters will increase in frequency and intensity as the Second Coming nears.
Did you know that the First Story in the Bible and the Last Two Verses of the Bible mentions Jesus first and second coming?
As mentioned above, the Creation account in Genesis mentions the First and Second Coming. In addition, the last two verses of the Bible read, “Surely, I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen” (Revelation 22:20–21).
Bible prophecy is recorded from cover to cover in the Bible, but many Christians hear very little about it. Many don’t realize Jesus is coming back to reign over this world and make it a better place.
Did you know that the Christmas Story mentions bout the First and Second Coming of Jesus?
God sent the angel Gabriel to deliver a message to a virgin named Mary. When Mary saw the angel, she was afraid (Luke 1:26–28).
Then we read: And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:30–33).
Notice that the angel revealed seven prophecies in these verses.
- The first four prophecies are about Jesus’ First Coming:
Mary would conceive and bear a son.
Mary’s son would be named Jesus.
Jesus would be great.
Jesus would be called the Son of the Highest.
- The last three prophecies are about His Second Coming:
The Lord God will give Jesus the throne of David.
Jesus will reign over the house of Jacob (Israel) forever.
Jesus will have a Kingdom that will never end.
- The first four prophecies were literally fulfilled, so we should expect the last three prophecies to be literally fulfilled as well.
God will give Jesus the throne of David (the throne of David was on earth in Jerusalem).
Jesus will reign (be King) over Israel. Jesus’ Kingdom will last forever.
Lest we forget, Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9–13). Also, Jesus will come back as King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16).
He will come back to establish a Kingdom on earth in Jerusalem.
